Youth Mediaworks' first project was an intercultural
youth radio workshop held at the Florence Community
Center in Florence, MA July 31 - August
4. Offered in collaboration with PeopleLink
and Valley Free Radio's Youth Collective and Community
Radio Collective, the workshop provided an opportunity
for local youth .
Participants learned about the grassroots community radio movement,
Valley Free Radio's history and mission, FCC regulations,
and radio programming formats and genres. They also
received
studio production and editing and on air skills training.
In addition, participants learn about producing
a music program and writing for radio.
Local youth joined students visiting from China and
created a radio show together. Once the material for
the show was recorded, a team of local youth assembled and edited the
60-minute program. The
show aired on Valley Free Radio, WXOJ-LP, 103.3 FM
in Northampton on Sunday, August 13 at 9 p.m.
A number of students also participated in a special
live call-in program, called YouthLink Live, which
aired on Valley Free Radio on Wednesday, August
2, at 1 p.m.
